Description
Common Name: Begonia Rex ‘Merengue’
Scientific Name: Begonia rex ‘Merengue’
Light:
Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate foliage and reduce the intensity of its colouring. Too little light may result in slower growth and less vibrant patterns.
Water:
Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil is dry. Keep soil lightly moist but never soggy. Rex Begonias are very sensitive to overwatering, which can quickly lead to root rot.
Humidity:
Thrives in high humidity. Use a humidifier or humidity tray to maintain consistent moisture levels. Avoid misting directly onto leaves, as this can cause spotting and fungal issues.
Temperature:
Ideal temperature range is 18–26°C. Protect from cold drafts and avoid temperatures below 15°C.
Soil:
Use a well-draining, airy potting mix (peat-based with perlite or coco coir). The mix should retain light moisture while allowing excess water to drain freely.
Fertilizer:
Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer. Reduce feeding during winter.
Pruning:
Remove damaged or dying leaves to maintain appearance and encourage fresh growth. Pinch back leggy growth to keep the plant compact and full.
Toxicity:
Toxic to pets and humans if ingested. Keep out of reach of children and animals.
