Description
Common Name: Spanish Moss
Scientific Name: Tillandsia usneoides
Light:
Prefers bright, indirect light. Can tolerate filtered gentle sun for part of the day, especially morning sun. Avoid harsh direct afternoon sunlight, which can dry it out too quickly.
Water:
Does not grow in soil and absorbs moisture from the air. Mist regularly (2–4 times per week depending on humidity) or soak in room-temperature water for 20–30 minutes once a week in drier conditions. Ensure it dries within a few hours after watering to prevent rot.
Humidity:
Thrives in high humidity environments. In dry indoor conditions, more frequent misting or soaking is required. Good airflow is essential.
Temperature:
Ideal temperature range is 15–30°C. Protect from frost and prolonged exposure to temperatures below 10–12°C.
Airflow:
Requires good air circulation to prevent moisture buildup and rot. Avoid enclosed, stagnant spaces.
Fertilizer:
Optional. Feed monthly during spring and summer using a heavily diluted bromeliad or epiphyte fertilizer applied via misting or soak water.
Pruning:
Trim only to remove dry, brown, or damaged sections. Gently separate strands to improve airflow if clumping occurs.
Toxicity:
Non-toxic to pets and humans.
